This is one of three limited edition bars released with the intention of spreading more awareness and education on wildfires including what causes them and implications.
The tundra is by definition a cold, treeless Arctic region in which the subsoil is permanently frozen. So how can such an area burn? Under the right conditions, tundra fires can occur and such occurrences are becoming more common, driven by heat and a lack of moisture. So far in 2019, wildfires have scorched more than 1.6 million acres in Alaska -- this will be the 8th year since 2000 with more than 1 million acres burned. This used to be a 1-10 year occurrence.
Scientists watch the tundra closely because of its significant role in climate change. Upper layers of soil and plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and insulate the permafrost below, keeping those layers cold. But damage to the tundra may actually accelerate global warming. The thawing of the permafrost is turning the tundra into a source of greenhouse gas emissions, as soil microbes convert carbon into carbon dioxide and methane.
