sunshine coast

This is one of three limited edition bars released with the intention of spreading more awareness and education on wildfires including what causes them and implications.

The Sunshine Coast is a beautiful area located in Queensland, Australia. "Bushfires" in Australia are actually common due to the country's hot, dry climate and certain species actually depend on bushfires to regenerate. The concern is that Australia's fire seasons have lengthened and are becoming more severe.

However, much less known is the deforestation that is happening in Australia. Australia's east coast as been compared to the Amazon as a "deforestation front" by the WWF. There is a full-blown land-clearing crisis, driven primarily by a booming livestock industry with much of the land clearing happening in Queensland. An estimated 1,500 football fields worth of native woodland and scrub are being cleared each and every day in Queensland.

Deforestation's impact within Australia are devastating on several fronts. Besides the fact that land clearing drives soil erosion and is killing 45 million animals in Queensland alone per year, the effects of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef are multiplied. Deforestation increases the amount of sediment that flows into rivers, and eventually on to the coral. That can starve them of light, and decrease their resilience to other impacts.
